Canadian singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Cat Clyde brings her country folk tunes to Ireland and the UK.

Cat Clyde

Canada’s Cat Clyde comes to Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Waterford this week to present her country-blues-folk tunes as found on 2023’s wonderful Down Rounder. Recorded in legendary L.A. studio Sound City with Tony Berg (Phoebe Bridgers, boygenius), Down Rounder sees the Ontario songwriter embrace the world of nature, featuring odes to the moon and a waltz through the seasons.

Cat Clyde at End of the Road 2024

The annual pilgrimage to Larmer Tree Gardens included witnessing Cat Clyde showcase her extensive range, delighting the End of the Road Festival crowd with an early afternoon appearance on the beloved Garden Stage. Songs from Down Rounder took centre stage, but to experience the singer from rural Canada’s vocal acrobatics in full flight was a festival highlight in itself.

Nashville noise-makers Snõõper play three Irish shows.

Snõõper

Prolong your summer punk-rock feels by taking in a show from Tennessee quintet, Snõõper. [Barely] Containing Blair Tramel (vocals), Connor Cummins and Ian Teeple (guitars), Happy Haugen (bass) and Cam Sarrett (drums), the Nashville fivesome released their first full-length record, Super Snõõper, last summer. Truly a force of nature, the Tennessee group’s whirlwind less-than-2-minute punk tunes played at breakneck speed is something to behold. Expect a guitarist crowd-surfing at full throttle by your head at all times. And when they have you gasping for breath they invite an entourage of surreal papier-mâché puppets to join them on stage, meaning by the end of the show you are not 100% what has just happened, but you know you want more. And suddenly the ever pogoing Blair and co. are gone into the night. Pure carnage. True fun.

Lankum, CMAT, Lisa O’Neill & more play End of the Road at the end of August.

End of the Road 2024

End of the Road is the low trees firm favourite alternative music festival and the Salisbury jamboree returns to Larmer Tree Gardens this year from Thursday 29th August until Sunday 1st September. Simon Taffe’s “drunken idea” has a firm reputation for breaking new bands and artists before most have ever laid ears on them so it’s always encouraging to see Irish musicans booked for the annual get-together. With some you’ll be very familiar, others less so but these are the six Irish artists set to rock End of the Road 2024.

Lankum @ The Garden Stage (Friday, 9.45pm)

To experience Lankum’s interpretation of Irish traditional music live is akin to being invited to stagger through the thin veil of reality into the netherworld and back again as the Dublin quartet’s doom-folk/nu-trad morphs from gentle balladry to drone metal. Truly a sight to witness live. And End of the Road’s hallowed Garden Stage provides the perfect backdrop for a group at the peak of their powers.

CMAT @ Woods (Friday, 5.30pm)

Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson’s chart-topping, award-winning country-pop takes centre stage with an appearance at End of the Road’s biggest platform, The Woods Stage. From Robbie Williams’ endorsements to wowing Glastonbury audiences, there simply is no ceiling to the heights CMAT continues to scale.

Traditional music fans make sure to check out further October highlights here.

Lisa O’Neill at The Garden Stage (Saturday, 4.30pm)

Lisa O’Neill has been masterfully holding court with End of the Road audiences for a number of years. 2024 marks the year where the Cavan songwriter graduates to The Garden Stage, a perfect foil for her unique voice to shine and enlighten. Last year’s wondrous flight through the bird kingdom on All Of This Is Chance expanded on O’Neill’s powerful body of work.

Newdad @ The Folly (Thursday, 9.15pm)

Galway’s Newdad will whirl their captivating blend of shoegaze, dream pop, and alternative rock across The Folly audience on Thursday evening. Their debut album, Madra, showcased an instinctive blend of melody and fuzz. Expect a mesmerizing live show inside an intimate tent to kickstart the first night of End of the Road.

Sprints @ The Big Top (Friday, 8.30pm)

Sprints, the Dublin-based post-punk band, surge into The Big Top with a high-energy, no-holds-barred live show, fuelled by infectious riffs and Karla Chubb’s powerful vocals. With their DIY ethos and socially conscious lyrics, Sprints have quickly cemented themselves as a must-see act not only in the Irish music scene but internationally. DIYmag.com put it best: “Musical exorcism at its very best.”

Gurriers @ The Folly (Friday, 7.30pm)

Raw and noisy, the raucous energy of quintet Gurriers will stretch The Folly seams to the limit as they make their End of the Road debut. Their 2024 five-track EP, No More Photos, is exhilarating from the first second and a must-catch for EOTR fans looking for energy and sweat at this year’s festival.

End of the Road takes place in Larmer Tree Gardens, England from 31st August-1st September 2024.

Clang Sayne to release Sounding Seams on 6th June

The multi-cornered genre-defying Clang Sayne return with Sounding Seams, a brand new E.P. to be released on 6th June. Founded and fronted by Wexford’s Laura Hyland, Clang Sayne last featured on the site when touring the 2017 record The Round Soul of the World, which Hyland toured around Ireland with long-time collaborators Carolyn Goodwin (woodwinds) & Matthew Jacobson (drums) who return for Sounding Seams. At once a sound and metal sculpture piece, Hyland began the project back in 2018 when invited by the Irish National Heritage Park in her hometown to compose a reaction to the “ancient art of metal forgery”.

A playful exploration of Pythagoras’ ‘music of the spheres’ hypothesis.

Sounding Seams E.P.

Referencing a myth concerning the ancient Greek philosopher and polymath Pythagoras’ encounter with a blacksmith, “and his ensuing vision of a musical cosmos – ‘the music of the spheres'”, the Wexford composer and songwriter conjured two live performances exploring the myth into the world through the use of a
sound installation constructed by dozens of DIY chimes, manifesting in a giant permanent chime sculpture. Hyland returned to the Heritage Park in 2022 with Goodwin and Jacobson (and guest musician Caimin Gilmore) to capture Sounding Seams as an E.P., recording live in a Crannóg – a prehistoric circular mud building).

Listen to Music of the Spheres on the player below.

Sounding Seams Documentary

The Sounding Seams project was also captured in video form, documenting the process from start to finish.

Clang Sayne

Clang Sayne was founded by Irish composer and songwriter Laura Hyland in 2008 to channel myriad musical influences into her songs via collaboration with fellow artists & musicians. Previous releases include Winterlands (2009), and The Round Soul of the World (2017).

Sounding Seams by Clang Sayne is released via Bandcamp on 6th June 2024.

U.S. jazz titan Kamasi Washington and more set for Cork Jazz Festival.

Kamasi Washington, one of the starlets of contemporary jazz music, has been confirmed for this year’s Cork Jazz Festival, along with many more.

Cork Jazz Festival 2024

Joining Washington will be Gregory Porter, Seun Kuti, Buena Vista All Stars, Orchestra Baobab, Amadou and Mariam, Alina Bzhezhinska, Takuya Kuroda, Les Amazones D’Afrique and Mary Coughlan. The annual music meet-up takes place over the October bank holiday weekend (Thursday 24th October to Monday 28th October 2024). Festival director Mark Murphy announced the details earlier today, commenting:

This line-up will resonate worldwide and put us on par with the greatest jazz festivals internationally. Gregory Porter sold out 2 shows at the Cork Opera House pre-Christmas and is the biggest voice of jazz internationally. Kamasi Washington is an American jazz superstar, and the high-end Afro-Cuban jazz of the Buena Vista All Stars is as good as it gets for a spectacle. And we have more to announce!

Flashing back to October 2020 – yes, that year – Kamasi was on my hitlist of 5 Jazz Artists I’d Love to See Play Cork Jazz Festival. There’s plenty of time for the other four to be announced, isn’t there?

Tickets for all shows go on sale this Friday 31st May on guinnesscorkjazz.com.

Update: Kamasi Washington at Cork Opera House tickets now on sale at corkoperahouse.ie.

Brigid Mae Power, Martin Hayes, Lisa O’Neill, Natalia Beylis, The Unthanks & more play Cork in October. Who needs the sun – Autumn is when Cork shines for gigs, concerts, festivals and live music.

Cork Gig Guide for October 2023

Cork really turns up the intensity for gigs in the Autumn. Sounds From a Safe Harbour, The Cork Folk Festival, Culture Night and Coughlan’s Live Music Festival lit up September and there is no sign of a let-up as a whole host of international and homegrown talent play shows throughout a multitude of venues this October. And we haven’t even mentioned the jazz yet. See below for highlights.

Brigid Mae Power @ The Chapel, Griffith College

Critically acclaimed dream-folk songwriter Brigid Mae Power released her fourth studio album, Dream From The Deep Well, earlier this year. A special autumn performance from The Chapel at Griffith College on Wellington Road presents a particularly special chance to see one of Ireland’s top contemporary talents perform live in an intimate venue.

Brigid Mae Power plays The Chapel, Griffith College Friday 6th October.

UPDATE: this event has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

Martin Hayes & The Common Ground Ensemble Live At St. Luke’s

The best way to accompany a master fiddler is to surround him with fellow master musicians. Comprised of Cormac McCarthy (piano), Kate Ellis (cello), Kyle Sanna (guitar) and Brian Donnellan (bouzouki/harmonium/concertina) and Hayes himself, the supergroup all arrive at the music from a different perspective, yet are bound by their own personal links to Irish traditional music. The magic that results can be heard through the release of Martin Hayes & The Common Ground Ensemble‘s captivating Peggy’s Dream, set free into the world earlier this year. Do not miss.

Martin Hayes & The Common Ground Ensemble are Live at St. Luke’s on Sunday 22nd October.

For tickets see eventbrite.

Also – see Martin Hayes solo at the legendary De Barra’s of Clonakilty, Friday 6th October.

Traditional music fans make sure to check out further October highlights here.

Lisa O’Neill at The Everyman

We’re huge fans of Lisa O’Neill round these parts, and couldn’t think of any venue more fitting for the Cavan songwriter than the beautiful Everyman Palace. Go hear tunes from O’Neill’s Rough Trade-released record All of This Is Chance at her biggest Cork concert to date. Another

Lisa O’Neill and Seamus Fogarty play The Everyman, Saturday 7th October

Natalia Beylis in Plugd

From the quiet comes Natalia Beylis, armed with a brand new record of surrealist soundscapes, exploratory keyboards and field recordings. Inspired by the wilds of Leitrim (where Beylis calls home) and an experimental music community (as one point of the Woven Skull triangle), Mermaids is a six-track release with a rescued CRB Elettronica Ancona – Model: Diamond 708 E Electric Keyboard at its core. Experience Mermaids in-person at Plugd Records on Saturday, 7th October, joined by Star Of The Sea. Or take a roadtrip west to catch Natalia Beylis at Levis’ Corner House on Sunday 8th October. For a recent interview with Natalia Beylis, see The Thin Air.

Natalia Beylis plays Plugd Records Saturday 7th October, Levis’ Corner House Sunday 8th October.

Tickets available from plugdrecords.com

The Unthanks Live at St. Luke’s

Rachel and Becky Unthank are the northeast of England’s celebrated sibling harmonious duo The Unthanks. The Northumbrian sisters have developed a close affinity with Cork over the years through various festivals and projects including a headline slot at the 2017 edition of the Cork Folk Festival. The Unthanks return for what are always special shows Live at St. Luke’s on Thursday 12th October.

There are few times when you discover a band and they stalk immediately to the heart of everything you love and hold dear.
