King’s Daughters and Sons
In my eyes, everything Rachel Grimes touches, similar to Mark Kozelek, turns to gold and, after a first listen to ‘Volunteer’, a track from the ex-Rachels latest project (a collaboration under the title King’s Daughters and Sons with Shipping News‘ Kyle Crabtree among others), I feel no differently.
If Then Not When, recorded in 2008 and 2009 (apparently direct to two inch tape!), is the debut album from a stellar group comprised of :
Kyle Crabtree – drums
Todd Cook (Dead Child) – bass
Rachel Grimes – piano, voice
Joe Manning – guitar, voice
Michael Heineman (The Grand Prize) – guitar, voice
The tiny bits and pieces I have heard so far remind me of the haunting Boa Morte yet this odd alt-folk/alt-rock supergroup certainly bring their own deck of cards to the table in the form of dark, spectral, masterfully-crafted songs.
The record is set to be released on the Scottish label Chemikal Underground (home to Mogwai, Arab Strap and more) this Friday (November 18th).
