Cork Gig Guide (June 6th-June 11th))
Terry Reid – Crane Lane, 6th June |
Everyone knows the 2012 series of Live at the Marquee concerts kicks off this weekend with French electro duo Justice the first artists to grace the Docklands-pitched tent on Thursday night before legendary heartbreaker Tom Petty (Friday), Ireland’s very own Imelda May (Saturday) and ska-punk soldiers The Specials (Monday) follow later in the week.
Flying a little further under the radar is the latest Bandicoot Promotion (responsible for bringing to Cork the annual Southern Gothic extravaganzas and, more recently, the superb Papa M) booking in the form of the well-travelled Terry Reid. For a little bit of background on the man himself, Reid turned down Jimmy Page‘s offer to become vocalist for The New Yardbirds in 1969 as he was already booked to support The Rolling Stones on their U.S. tour. The Huntingdon-born singer recommended a certain young Brummie (going by the name of Robert Plant) to take his place and soon after also rejected the chance to become lead singer for Deep Purple. More recently, Reid-penned tunes have been covered by the likes of The Raconteurs, Rumer and three tracks appeared in the Rob Zombie-directed, 2005 gore-fest The Devil’s Rejects. This one takes place tonight (6th June) in The Crane Lane, is FREE in and starts early (8.30pm).
Sub Pop‘s Seattle-based duo TheeSatisfaction are in The Pavilion as part of Cork’s longest running hip-hop night Jam’s tenth birthday celebrations on Thursday as Choice Music Price-hoarder Jape returns to Cork for the second week running with a date down in Clon on Friday.
