Cork Gig Guide: 28th January – 3rd February
My dear Martha’s back…
Canadian chanteuse Martha Wainwright returns to Cork for a Friday night date on Emmet Place. Oh she of the very famous family, enthralled all in attendance at Skibbereen’s Cork X Southwest with her chameleonic shifts from heart-warming folkie tales to more rowdy and rambunctious Edith Piaf sea-faring ballads and will now charm the city centre itself with a visit to Cork Opera House.
Stand-outs from the beginning and mid-week include genre-busters Waking Up Sunday‘s late night show in The Crane Lane (Monday) and northerner Foy Vance in Cyprus Avenue on Thursday evening. The weekend itself includes Rory Francis O’Brien in The Roundy as part of Heroes & Villains Exhibition launch (Friday – see the FB event here for details) and Estonian Maria Minerva‘s début on Leeside (I think) with the electro-enchantress paying a visit to Half Moon Street on Saturday evening.
FREE GIG OF THE WEEK
Grave Lanterns in The Pavilion on Thursday. Some of the best players from Cork’s alternative underworld group together to play some reverb-doused garage-pop. DO NOT MISS!
