Record Store Day: Cork

Oh lordy, the shenanigans planned on Leeside for RSD14…

I pretty much covered everything in the weekly gig guide on Tuesday but I still felt Saturday’s Record Store Day-specific events required a condensed post. So here’s the low-down:

Plugd Records (1st Floor, Triskel Arts Centre, Tobin Street)
Cork’s mecca for music will again provide the pivot for all things good on Record Store Day.
The limited edition releases and the slightly-less-limited-yet-equally-if-not-better back-catalogue will all be available once the doors are cast open at about 10am.
Official events planned for the shop during the day include an old fashioned listening party where Elastic Sleep fans get to hear the band’s début EP Leave You in its entirety before its official release the following Saturday (28th April). Triskel Arts Centre TDC (Ground Floor, Triskel Arts Centre, Tobin Street)
The Shaker Hymn unveil ‘Hunter and the Headman’/’The Runaway’, a 7″ especially for Record Store Day and will be playing the TDC as part of the Plugd/We Play Here weekender. Stage times have recently changed so take note of the earlier 7.30pm door time on Saturday evening. Times and order for Sunday is still to be confirmed.

Gulpd Café (Ground Floor, Triskel Arts Centre, Tobin Street)
Plugd’s sister establishment will feature plenty of record-revolving acrobatics with Twin Lights, Nativizm and Keep On Jumpin’ spinning rekkids in the café from about 7.30pm. If the night was half as good as last year’s Gulpd celebrations then this will be fun.

Art For Blind Records (Cork Community Print Shop, Lower Oliver Plunkett Street)
A For B welcome a whole host of guest DJs to their new residence to spin some discs kicking off at 12pm with Edel Doherty. Altered Hours fans take note, the psych-rock quintets’ new ‘Dig Early’ 7″ will be available ahead of its official launch on 21st April so that’s a must for the “please-remember” list. The Pavilion (Carey’s Lane)
Today marks exactly one year since Cork independent label Mountain Dew Records‘ (MDR) inception with founder Colm O’Herlihy and team celebrating 12 months of their excellent micro-label by curating a night on Carey’s Lane. Joined by Band of Clouds (wholly responsible for the beautiful Appear to Float, released earlier this year) and deadly Dublin dudes Meltybrains?, this one should be pretty great too.

Records & Relics (Lancaster Quay, Washington Street)
Cork’s youngest purveyors of second hand vinyl have specifically sourced special second-hand goodies for RSD14 and promise “djs spinning vinyl of all genres, cheese, wine and craic. We have invited some other sellers to join us so there will be plenty of good quality vinyl to be had and lots of discounts in store.” It’s a vintage shop too so well worth a snoop if you haven’t wandered in their direction just yet.

Golden Discs (Patrick Street)
Believe it or not, Golden Discs does actually count as an independent record shop. Those hunting some special edition releases should add a stop-off at the former HMV premises (BOO! – I jest, I jest) to Saturday’s plan of action.
