Cork Gig Guide: 12th-18th April 2016

Kimya Dawson – Cyprus Avenue (Sunday)

This week in Cork: Record Store Day at Plugd, Kimya Dawson, Booka Brass Band, Giant Sand, The Frank & Walters and more…

April is already looking like the busiest month on the calendar so far this year with the following seven days stocked full of international and homegrown talent. 23 years on from their formation, 90’s pop-rockers Reef return to the touring circuit with a Wednesday night show in Cyprus Avenue. Listen to the new single ‘How I Got Over’, complete with gospel choir below. Thursday then throws up a calamitous clash with Howe Gelb’s Giant Sand – joined by Grandaddy’s Jason Lytle – in Cyprus Avenue whilst Coughlan’s Live Promotions arm brings Booka Brass Band to The Oliver Plunkett so it’s a case of dusty outlaw Americana (often with a cosmic twist) versus stomping brass.

Local legends The Frank & Walters unveil latest record Songs for the Walking Wounded in Cork Opera House on Friday evening with brands new tracks such as ‘Look At Us Now’ set to be mixed in with classic Franks’ compositions on a night that also features Rubyhorse.

Vinyl lovers will be out in force on Saturday as Record Store Day 2016 is celebrated internationally with a glut of limited edition releases. Saturday also marks Plugd Records’ 5th birthday in their Triskel Arts Centre home so there’ll be a whole lot of records played throughout the day culminating in a night of live music in the TDC auditorium. The Bonk, Roslyn Steer and more feature. That same evening not too far away, September Girls do their own celebrating with the release of their new album, Age of Indignation, in Cyprus Avenue.

To top the weekend off, former Moldy Peach Kimya Dawson rounds off a trio of excellent Cyprus Avenue bookings this week with a (possibly?) first ever stop off in Cork on Sunday night.

LATE ADDITION:
– New Cork band Not Earth featuring members of The Great Balloon Race and Hags announce surprise album launch party for Gulpd Cafe on Sunday.
