Cork Gig Guide: 15th-21st November
This week in Cork: Lake Street Dive, Cuttin’ Heads 1st anniversary, Cork Film Festival, Myles Manley & more…
*As published in Totally Cork November edition.
Although the focus is mostly on film this week, it’s another seven days of sessions down south as local, national and international bands continue to come to Cork. That’s not to say it’s not possible to blend both with the audio visual centrepiece of this year’s Film Festival staged on the altar of St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral. With electronics from Eat My Noise, organ by John O’Brien and David Mathúna in charge of visuals, fLux provide a “reimagining of the original organ at St Fin Barre’s Cathedral in a unique and never-before-seen way.” Preview takes place early Thursday with an extra concert taking place that night and two repeats on Friday.
Saturday serves up a selection of sounds with Torontonian indie quintet July Talk taking their European tour to Cyprus Avenue; Wicklow producer t-woc launches album sentinelas so expect hip-hop/electronics and dub in Triskel TDC; Cuttin’ Heads Collective celebrate a 1st anniversary by commandeering the almost-forgotten Liquid Lounge from 5pm until late; and Wexford dream-pop twosome Frankenstein Bolts play Crane Lane Theatre. Now that’s choice.
Sunday provides no respite with veteran Tokyo garage rock trio Electric Eel Shock firing up Fred’s whilst Sligo songwriter Myles Manley takes charge of the increasingly popular Sunday session Gulpd. Roadtrippers head west to Ballydehob for Canada based singers Ben Kunder & Sarah McDougall take their tour to Levis’ Corner House for a pass the hat show before banjo-slinger Morgan O’Kane opens a brand new week with another riotous performance in Crane Lane.
