Cork Gig Guide: 28th February-6th March
Pleasure Beach – Thursday, Cyprus Avenue |
Musicians from Michigan, New York, Belfast and York descend upon Cork over the next seven days giving this week’s gig guide a particularly international feel. American sound-sculptor Thomas Meluch – a.k.a. Benoit Pioulard – comes to Cork courtesy of DIY promoters Fractured Air for an intimate show in Gulpd Cafe. Teaming up with local electronic mages Wry Myrrh, the Seattle-based musician has been receiving critical praise left, right and centre for sixth Kranky offering, Listening Matter so ensure to swipe this one into the virtual calendar.
Earlier in the week, BBC New Generation Artist Laura Jurd, heralded as “one of the strongest, most interesting new trumpet voices in jazz,” brings her formidable group Dinosaur to Triskel Christchurch. Expect electronic bass and synths on top of drums and trumpet i.e. this is going to be bloody cool.
Belfast rockers Pleasure Beach continue their slowburn rise to the top of the Irish indie pile with a Thursday night date in Cyprus Avenue whilst August Wells complete a whole bunch of Cork shows beginning with a double-date in Coughlan’s that same evening.
Seeing as spring is now here there will be those looking to make the most of the extra light in the form of a roadtrip. Look no further than the upcoming special screening in Connolly’s of Lost in France, a brand new documentary which explores the rise of this Glaswegian music scene thanks to the formation of cult record label Chemikal Underground (Mogwai, Arab Strap and Franz Ferdinand). Music on the night will be provided by founding Delgados guitarist/keyboardist Emma Pollock and Scottish guitarist RM Hubbert who played a beguiling set when supporting Mogwai in Cork a few moons ago. This all takes place on Saturday evening. York songwriter Benjamin Francis Leftwich completes the week with a show on Caroline Street on Sunday.
