If Kamasi Washington is seen as holding fort as the leader of contemporary jazz across the Atlantic, London is positively boiling over on a wave of hyper-talented, energy-packed musicians running amok. Take a listen to Maisha, drummer Jake Long’s super “spiritual-afro-jazz” collective featuring the extraordinary Nubya Garcia on sax. With debut record There Is A Place hitting the shelves courtesy of the Gilles Peterson-founded Brownswood Recordings on Friday 9th November, the group “inspired by the sounds of artists such as Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders” join Sons of Kemet, Shabaka Hutchings as the heartbeat of a throbbing London scene.
