Best New Albums 2023: False Lankum by Lankum
False Lankum
Lankum
In Irish mythology, Féth fíada is a magical mist or veil which members of the Tuatha Dé Danann, Celtic deities that walked the lands of Ireland, use to enshroud themselves, rendering their presence invisible to human eyesight. At times it feels like Lankum appeared from this ceo, this mist. Apparently there was a point at which they weren’t there, but it feels now like the quartet have always been with us.
That quartet of course consists of brothers Ian and Daragh Lynch, Cormac MacDiarmada and Radie Peat, who went international with previous record The Livelong Day, scooping Ireland’s RTÉ Choice Music Prize, and securing places on prestigious end of year lists such as NPR’s 25 Best Albums of 2019.
Many of the tracks on False Lankum live in the aforementioned supernatural mist. Take Clear Away in the Morning for example, an original recording with hushed vocals that lull the listener into a dream-like state of safety, yet a feeling of doom hovers like a spectre in the background. Recorded (and produced) with long-term collaborator John “Spud” Murphy across 2021 and 2022, the creation of False Lankum was spread across two different Irish studios: Guerilla Studios and the aptly titled Hellfire Studio.
False Lankum is a dark and atmospheric exploration of the human condition, dealing with themes of loss, and grief. Yet turns of melody and Radie Peat’s extraordinary voice (such as on opener Go Dig My Grave, a traditional song found by Radie Peat via Jean Ritchie) provide the gaps for poignant moments of beauty to breakthrough the stormclouds.
