Cork Film Festival 2017
Plenty of music-related big screen action at this year’s CFF…
The 62nd edition of Cork Film Festival officially launched on Friday night with Ireland’s oldest film extravaganza well underway. For those who like to follow the music-related movies, below are some of the highlights:
Instrumental in shaping the early sound of Kraftwerk, going on to work with legends such as Neu!, Cluster, DAF and Devo, eventually breaking through to the mainstream with the likes of Ultravox and The Eurythmics, a world without studio engineer and music producer Conny Plank’s influence is unfathomable. Plank’s son Stephan and Reto Caduff, set out to discover the side of Stephan’s father which he did not know, whilst at the same time, through interviews with such luminaries as Michael Rother, Daniel Miller and the late Holger Czukay, providing an appreciation of the man and his craft.
Eugene Jarecki traverses America in Elvis Presley’s Rolls Royce in an attempt to discover the heart and soul of the country. Featuring interviews with David Simon, Emmylou Harris, Alec Baldwin and Chuck D.
Director Grant McPhee (Big Gold Dream) crafts an endearing, jangly love letter to the musical revolution of the 1980s Glasgow suburbs. Featuring The Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream, The Soup Dragons and their contemporaries.
Jeane Balibar plays an actress playing the role of celebrated French singer Barbara. The film has biopic elements but the real treat is the songs and their settings – stages revealed through parting velvet curtains, elegant wood panelled recording studios and impeccably recreated vintage apartments.
Just the mention of Saturday Night Fever brings to mind disco lights, smooth moves and jive talkin’. In a beautiful new restoration and directors cut, we once again get to see the film that director John Badham wanted us to see, with its iconic soundtrack from the Bee Gees.
