Cork Gig Guide: 10th-16th May 2016

Lisa O’Neill in Coughlan’s (Fri & Sat)
This week in Cork: Lisa O’Neill, John Metcalfe, Little Green Cars, Myles Manley, The Burning Hell, Stephanie Nilles and more…

There’s a wealth of homegrown talent showcasing their musical wares this week in Cork as the gigs continue to come thick and fast. Cavan songwriter Lisa O’Neill is a regular, warmly welcomed visitor down south, so much so that Lisa plays two dates in Cork this weekend. With third record Pothole In The Sky on shelves for the past couple of weeks, Coughlan’s on Douglas Street plays host on both Friday and Saturday night. For an extract from a chat I had with Lisa last year ahead of her Christmas show in St. Luke’s, recap here.

Also touring an eagerly awaited new album are Little Green Cars who play the slightly more spacious Opera House on Saturday night. Having hit the top of the charts with their debut, Absolute Zero, the Dublin folk-rockers are back with Ephemera, featuring a more focused and consistent sound and I’m particularly liking the gentle hush of ‘Winds of Peace’, now streaming on soundcloud. Use the player at the bottom of the page to listen.

Those looking to keep to a single geographical location on Friday, the Triskel houses two recommended show with Myles Manley playing a cafe show in Gulpd whilst composer and multi-instrumentalist John Metcalfe playing an exclusive Irish date in Christchurch that same night so you might be able to squeeze both gigs in if you are quick from the pews.

Early in the week, Canadian songwriter Mathias Kom provides a perfect excuse for a school-night road-trip by bringing tracks from his new album, Public Library, to De Barra’s (Clonakilty) on Wednesday. Jeffrey Lewis fans should enjoy.
