Weekly Cork Gig Guide: 16th-22nd June 2015

This week in Cork: Beck, Mogwai, Circuit Des Yeux, the final three days of Cork Midsummer Festival and more.
Three incredible gigs in the space of three days, all on school nights. This week is going to be fun! Musical chameleon Beck slides into Cork this weekend for what I consider to be one of the most exciting BIG concerts announced down south in a number of years. Beck’s 2014 record Morning Phase is a a thing of alt-folk beauty – featuring at #2 on the 2014 best album list – and it will be interesting to see how he blends the low-key delights of ‘Morning’ and ‘Blue Moon’ with upbeat classic Beck tracks ‘Loser’ and ‘Devil’s Haircut’ in a live setting. With local alt-rockers O Emperor now added to the bill, this one’s going to be great and takes place tonight (Tuesday).
There’s no time to catch the breath as we move straight on to Cork Opera House where Scottish post-rockers Mogwai will be holding court on Wednesday night. Celebrating 20 years in existence, the Glaswegian five will be joined by compatriot RM Hubbert as they run through highlights of their incomparable back catalogue.
Then on Thursday, it’s to Gulpd Café for Haley Fohr’s Circuit Des Yeux. For a recent interview with Haley that I compiled for Thumped.com, click here. Otherwise, wrap your earlobes around In Plain Speech, Haley’s extraordinary fifth studio record.
Cork Midsummer Festival part deux resumes on Friday with another full weekend of art, music, theatre and plain ol’ fun planned from Friday-Sunday. Two particular music highlights include a heavenly breakfast with Crash Ensemble (see an interview with CE and festival curator Kath Gorman here) and Jason Yarde‘s Bold As Brass extravaganza on the Sunday. For an interview with the latter, see Thursday’s Evening Echo.
