Cork Jazz Festival Special: Thursday Line-up
Thursday listings for Cork Jazz Festival 2013…
Thursday of the jazz is usually an easy-going affair, allowing locals and early visitors soak up the atmosphere at a more relaxed pace before the main event really gets going and the 2013 edition is no different with a small number of events scattered throughout the city’s diverse selection of locations on opening night. Don’t let the title mislead or deter, if jazz isn’t your thing it’s possible to enjoy a music-filled weekend without hearing even a single trumpet-parp or ivory-tinkle. My top tip for Thursday is definitely U.S. trad-ster Rhiannon Giddens with the voice of the Carolina Chocolate Drops set to play a very special Cork Orchestral Society-commissioned show in the Cork School of Music with Giddens performing “music by African-American composers”. Tickets range from €10-€22 depending on member/non-member status and are available on the door.
Those looking for something a little more low-key why not pop a head (yours preferably) in to Gulpd for a night of “cinematic soul” courtesy of California/Swedish collection Ghost Town Jenny. A little later in the evening, Cyprus Avenue host Wicklow post-rockers God Is An Astronaut, with the Glen-of-the-Downers currently in the midst of touring seventh studio album Origins.
