Cork Gig Guide (August 7th-12th) & Competition

After the frantic festival weekend I must admit it is good to be back sleeping in a bed not comprised of mud and what seemed like granite in spots. So who’s not playing in a tent this week down Leeside…
Former Hold Steady key-king Franz Nicolay lugs his multi-instrumental-packed luggage to Cyprus Avenue later this evening while the Lydia Des Dolles-fronted rock machine Sweet Jane travel south for a late show on Phoenix Street. The same venue houses Adela & The Meanits on the following night, it being her ninth date this month as the Laois lass rattles up 32 gigs in 32 counties in 31 Augustian days. Local boy Alan White provides support on the night.
Thursday night on Carey’s Lane is jammed as a bunch of musical folk appear in the name of charity to help raise funds in the name of IMNDA. That’s in The Pavilion of course while further afield De Barra’s out west in Clonakilty have a real treat in store, welcoming the Band of Clouds collective to its sitting room ahead of an Electric Picnic appearance in September. The performance will feature compositions from the haunting Outside Broadcast, produced and arranged by John Haggis, recorded with input from the various talented characters to pass through Waterford’s Granny it’s OK Studio including a certain Katie Kim.
It’s all about the beats on Caroline Street on Friday night as a number of electro mages take over Cyprus Avenue (rising Cork starlet REID recently filled in for the MIA Beardyman at Indiependence) while the Triskel’s TDS plays host to a night of “visual and aural stimulants”. Dorothy Cotter’s alter-ego EleventyFour plays an acoustic set in the neighbouring room across the way in Gulpd so plenty of options there. Not sure if I have ever had a bad night in the Triskel to be honest; And I have been there quite a lot…
A horrible clash happens on Saturday as the folky goodness of Hidden Highways and Peter Delaney (Half Moon) cracks heads with the super Saint Yorda (The Pavilion). Difficult not to be mesmerized by the latter’s hypnotic baritone vocals, supplied very capably by Paul O’Reilly. Half Moon shows usually end early though so it may be possible to squeeze in a bit of both.
The Ambience Affair return to Cork to wave the week goodbye with a free show in The Bowery‘s roofbar.
