Cork Gig Guide (June 25th-July 1st)
Sam Amidon |
Incredibly gifted folkie Sam Amidon is just one of a half-dozen or so critically-acclaimed names to appear on the jaw-smackingly excellent bill that is the Cork Midsummer Festival‘s Bowerbird: Modern Folk & Beyond.
The hauntingly beautiful Triskel Arts Centre’s Christchurch is the venue for two nights of music that will also see the tremendous talents of Malcolm Middleton, Andy Irvine, Aidan Moffat & Bill Wells and more visit Cork for a weekend. Worth the ticket price for Amidon alone. Well that’s my tuppence anyhow…
Retreating back to tonight the monthly KC Sessions return to The Crane Lane followed by a late show from well-travelled American traditionalist Morgan O’Kane & Band on a busy night on Phoenix Street. Britpop renegades (or should I say Britpop survivors) Gomez will bring “the hits” to Cyprus Avenue on Tuesday. The number of times ‘Get Myself Arrested’ has been broken out during a drunken singsong over the years is bordering on the triple digits so it would be good to see it live and “sober”.
Limrockers Windings opened the Monday of Forbidden Fruit in Kilmainham at the beginning of the month, returning to Cork with a Thursday night show in An Bróg on Olly Plunky (Oliver Plunkett Street to non-Corkers although Corkonians don’t call it that either). The Hot 8 Brass Band succeeded where most fail by getting my hips a jiggling on the dancefloor at last year’s jazz weekend. The The Crane Lane is their destination on Friday. Strongly recommend you be there if you like boisterous brass.
Besides the various Cork Midsummer Festival events the weekend sees The Island Jam invade Cobh for a couple of days Cobh whilst Myrtleville’s in Pine Lodge welcomes a trio of quality bands in the shape of Axis Of, Gascan Ruckus and Cork’s very own Terriers who ripped up The Pavilion on Saturday night.
*Movie lovers should begin the week at the Triskel Arts Centre enjoying their two night sci-fi extravaganza.
