New: Glimmermen

Experienced members of underground Dublin groups Boxes, Jackbeast and The Holy Ghost Fathers combine to create what they have self-christened “urban post-rock blues”.

It has been a fruitful week for The G-Man’s innuendo-heavy inbox with Twin Terrace‘s impressively lo-fi debut delighting earlier in the week. For reasons unbeknownst even to myself, it has taken quite a while to get around to Glimmermen who first contacted the blog regarding their EP launch with blog favourites Family Planning in Whelan’s last month. Well the joke is on me as Satellite People, the trio’s debut EP, turns out to be one of the best releases to invade my eardrums since the dawning of 2012.

Something great grabs instantly with opener ‘Good Man’, its simplistic plea of innocence – “I was a good man, I never done nothing bad, I never fell down.” – strikingly powerful in its honesty before flipping the chart: “I was a bad man, I never done nothing good”. It’s not exactly Edgar Allen Poe on paper but consider it literature for the ears and anyway, I prefer Chuck.

To summarise the trio, think Nick Cave hijacking the leadership of The Redneck Manifesto and you may gain a glimpse of Gav, J. and Phil’s antipathetic disdain for “satellite people in satellite towns” layered expertly over post-rock instrumental brilliance. Exceptional EP.
