Cork Gig Guide (April 30th- May 7th)
Southern Gothic should be the words on every alternative music fan’s lips this weekend with Jeffrey Lewis, Gemma Ray, Hanin Elias and more rolling their dark-shrouded bandwagon into Cork for four days of something different. A Southern Gothic special will be posted on the blog later in the week so stay tuned! UPDATE – click here.
With the hectic weekend that is in it, understandably the next few days are pretty quiet but a rare chance to catch the excellent Leaflog on Wednesday is an opportunity not to be sniffed at.
Apart from the Phoenix Street party, the long weekend has got quality options a-plenty with the delicate tones of the travelling harmony haven that is The Lost Brothers on Friday and the last ever GoodCop BadCop-promoted gig (well at least for a year or so) on Saturday evening, both in Cyprus Avenue on Caroline St. Featuring a wealth of talent – No Spill Blood, Elk, Terriers and The Maori John Wayne no less – just €8 gets you in for what is sure to be one hell of a send off for Mr. McGrath.
Choice music prize-nominated Tieranniesaur return to The Pavilion after such a successful visit in February backed by Cork’s very own gothic surf-poppers, Saint Yorda.
Not too far away another mini-festival sets up camp with 80s pop icons The Human League bringing their hook-heavy classics to the site of the old Beamish Brewery site on Saturday as part of Murphy’s first little big weekend of the Summer. Either side of that day will see local legends The Frank & Walters (Friday) and the incredible Iarla Ó’Lionáird (Sunday) entertaining the lucky folk whose name’s randomly popped out of the Murphy’s hat.
