Popical Islanders Ahoy
As posted last month the indie pop collective that is Popical Island drifts into town (town being Cork) this weekend with a host of their talented stowaways in tow.
All three of Saturday night’s music makers visited Cork recently enough with Squarehead and Land Lovers (read an interview with LL here) playing An Realt Dearg and Tieranniesaur in Cyprus Avenue just before Christmas. Both Realt Dearg gigs were great but unfortunately I missed Annie Tierney and team in CA so I am pretty bloody excited as regards seeing the Dubliner’s in live action especially with Tieranniesaur featuring high on the top 50 albums of the year list and the beguiling ‘Here Be Monsters’ surely one of the singles/tracks of the year.
On Sunday The Walpurgis Family will serve up some goodies from their just released second album Dawn which you can stream in its entirety below. Both gigs kick off early enough and both are absolutely free. If you are feeling particularly active this weekend it is recommended to try pop in and out of the ongoing Days On End experimental sound festival as well as taking in the various Popical Island bands. Oh the joys of Cork’s city centre being so cosy and compact!
– Tieranniesaur, Squarehead and Land Lovers play The Pavilion on Carey’s Lane on Saturday, February 11th
– The Walpurgis Family and Lie Ins play The Pavilion’s downstairs bar on Sunday, February 12th
– Entry is free for both gigs with doors at 9pm
