Hello Moon – cornered
My last outing to the capital of 2011 was a fruitful one. Well to be honest it was a shopping trip that resulted in no Christmas present purchases so fruitful, unless completely redefined lately, is probably not the most suitable word. I didn’t even eat any fruit! I did finally catch Hello Moon though…
The dreampop loveliness of ‘Sievehead’ has populated the G-Man playlist a number of times (such as November 25th)) so it was a particularly pleasant surprise to find that, as a live force, Hello Moon rock with the best of them.
This fact was cemented within seconds as the foursome broke straight into ‘The Calculus Affair’, a guitar-led instrumental that Explosions In The Sky would certainly be proud of – if the Texans drank a little more coffee.
It being a small room (The Loft bookstore in The Twisted Pepper) the vocals suffered a little on the night yet Alan, Eamon, Amanda and Alan simply went for it displaying why their apartment complex of jangly, fuzzy guitar pop is one of the hottest properties in Dublin right now. Well if it is not yet then it will be, believe you me.
The night overall – the inaugural opening of the monthly Cornered Folk meetings – was a success for Brian Nally, who also impressed as leader of indie-folksters Beyond Olden Acre who opened the night with a suitably lo-fi set. The finely Christmas jumpered Biggles Flys Again and artpop loonies Grand Pocket Orchestra topped the night off splendidly. Definitely keep an eye out for the next Cornered Folk meeting as it will be interesting to see how they follow up Saturday night’s line-up.
As regards Hello Moon, Popical Island have bagged themselves a real gem.
