The Reich Effect : And We’re Off!
A screening of Phase To Face and a live interview with the man himself has set up the rest of The Reich Effect festivities, which run until Sunday, quite nicely.
As I type the Pulitzer Prize winner is sitting in the back of a Cork pub enjoying a drink with John Kelly, his interviewer for the night. Following the viewing of Eric Darmon and Frank Mallet’s documentary (in which Steve Reich discusses topics such as his love of John Coltrane and Stravinsky, his time spent in Ghana studying drumming with various tribes and, of course, his music) Reich freely spoke with Kelly about how he feels young composers should have their work played live regularly rather than just sit around talking about it, embarrassing memories of a meeting with Stravinsky, how he came to find himself working with Bryce Dessner from The National, and his latest work WTC which will have its Irish premiere tomorrow night when The Kronos Quartet take to the Opera House stage at 8pm.
Thursdays line-up will also see Carolyn Goodwin (sax), Fiona Kelly (flute), Kate Ellis (cello) and Niwel Tsumbu perform Reich‘s Counterpoint in the Firkin Crane at 6pm. The days events will finish up in the Half Moon Theatre with Clíodhna Ryan and Kate Ellis’ Kaleidoscope Caravan at 10pm followed by Donal Dineen.
