Katie Kim To Play The Bowery in July
The disappointment of The Quad closing (see here for a recap) last week will hang heavily on the Cork live scene for a while but at least there will still be live music on Tuckey Street with The Bowery appearing to be pretty active in booking shows for the best of the Irish scene.
OOAL Records artists such as Windings have played the newly opened nightclub/venue recently and the latest act confirmed is the magnificent Katie Kim.
Kim, who will return to Cork after co-headlining The Spiegeltent with Mick Flannery as part of the 2011 Cork Midsummer Festival programme, is set to release a double album this Summer which will be her follow up to debut Twelve.
In a country littered with solo acoustic singer/songwriters and instrumental rock/post-rock bands (not a negative!), Katie Kim definitely brings something different to the table with dream-like instrumentation providing a whispery backdrop for her understated (and, at times, steely) vocal. It is no wonder Mazzy Star comparisons are common but there is something a bit more dark and direct about the Waterford native. Respected DJ Donal Dineen is a big admirer and has championed Katie Kim‘s cause for many a year.
“Warm-up” duties on the night will be fulfilled by The Handless Organist who impressed the headline act herself with a remix of her own track “A Fool Of Me” which you can check out below along with the original. A chilled out set is expected to set the tone for the night so I recommend getting in early to catch both acts.
Katie Kim and The Handless Organist will play The Bowery on Sunday, July 17th.
