Record Company Special : Sub Pop Records
Alot of hatred and hostility is pointed towards the music “suits” these days but we cannot overlook the good guys still battling for good over evil.
Sub Pop Records survived one explosion and implosion cycle to come out the other side with a different feel and once again the forerunner or an alternative spirit.
Originally founded by Bruce Pavitt and soon joined by Jonathan Poneman Sub Pop unleashed grunge on the world when it became the home base of the Seattle Sound. Bands on the books included Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Tad, Dwarves and of course the soon to conquer the world, Nirvana.
Nirvana moved on to the more commercial Geffen Records after releasing the album “Bleach” on Sub Pop leaving the label with ideas of grandeur. Years of trying to “go more commercial” ended in failure before the back to basics idea was reintroduced.
The label now boasts such important alternative acts as :
Iron & Wine
Go! Team
The Postal Service – Gold Record for Give Up
Fleet Foxes
Flight of the Conchords – Platinum Record for eponymous album
Foals
CSS
The Shins – Gold Record for Wincing the Night Away
